Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee in an interview spoke about being offered only negative or villain roles after his character Bhiku Mhatre in Satya got famous. He revealed that he was out of work for eight months after the release of Satya. In addition to becoming well-known because of the movie, Manoj won numerous accolades for his portrayal of the Mumbai mobster. Manoj refused all the rich offers and persisted in getting the kinds of roles he desired.
In a recent interview with Kamiya Jani for a joint interview on Sunday Brunch and The Bombay Journey, Manoj discussed how Ram Gopal Varma's Satya paved the way for him as an actor, but it also put him in a box and he was only given negative roles for a very long time following the film's release. He said, “After Satya, the industry looked at me as a new villain. I kept saying I won't do villain (roles). After Satya, I was out of work for eight months.”
He further added, “I had a lot of offers and they were all opposite superstars as a villain. But I had thought of something else. It was tough to say no to that much of money and work. I didn't have both before Satya, and I was saying no to both after Satya. I didn't know whether I was right in doing that.”
Satya was co-written by Saurabh and Anurag Kashyap. Helmed by Ram Gopal Varma, the film also feaured JD Chakravarthy, Urmila Matondkar, Saurabh Shukla, Aditya Shrivastava, and Paresh Rawal besides Manoj Bajpayee.
On the work front, Manoj is currently preoccupied with the Gulmohar promotions for his forthcoming movie. In addition to Sharmila Tagore, Amol Palekar, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Kaveri Seth, and Utsavi Jha, it is directed by Rahul Chittella. It will stream on a leading OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar from March 3, 2023.
