The designer steps into the spotlight with a deeply personal look that celebrates his city, his journey, and the hands behind his legacy.

When Manish Malhotra arrived at the Met Gala 2026, he didn’t just present a look—he unveiled a story rooted in identity, memory, and craftsmanship. Known for dressing some of the biggest names in Indian cinema, the designer turned the spotlight on himself with an ensemble that paid homage to his hometown, Mumbai, and the artisans who have shaped his decades-long career.

Dressed in a classic black bandhgala layered with a dramatic, structured velvet cape, Malhotra’s look stood out for both its visual impact and emotional depth. The ensemble, which took over 960 hours to create and involved more than 50 artisans, was a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with his label.

The cape served as the centrepiece—an intricate canvas that brought together multiple traditional embroidery techniques including dori, zardozi, chikankari, and kasab. Set against a rich black base, the detailed white-on-black embroidery unfolded like a cinematic narrative, drawing inspiration from Mumbai’s iconic landscape and its enduring spirit.

What elevated the look further was its deeply personal touch. Malhotra chose to immortalize the very people behind his creations by incorporating the names and signatures of his artisans directly into the embroidery. The gesture transformed the outfit into a moving tribute—turning fashion into a collaborative story rather than a singular vision.

Adding a layer of theatricality, the cape also featured miniature, sculptural elements depicting artisans at work, a creative nod to the craftsmanship behind the scenes. The cuff of the bandhgala further anchored the narrative with custom embroidery reading ‘Mumbai – City of Dreams’, reinforcing the designer’s connection to the city that shaped his journey.

Malhotra completed the look with pieces from his own high jewellery line, including a signature brooch and collar pins that added a refined finish to the elaborate silhouette.

With this appearance, Manish Malhotra delivered more than just a red carpet moment. He presented a powerful statement about heritage, collaboration, and creative legacy—bringing Indian craftsmanship to the forefront of global fashion while celebrating the community that continues to bring his vision to life.
