Following the controversial removal of actress Nayanthara's film Annapoorani from Netflix due to alleged religious sentiments concerns, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has weighed in with a nuanced perspective. The film, initially released in theatres on December 1, faced accusations after its December 29 OTT premiere on Netflix. In response, one of the producers reportedly agreed to withdraw the film for editing.

In an interview with Zoom, Bhatt acknowledged the "very sensitive times" we live in, particularly for those in the entertainment industry striving for "resounding success." He highlighted the drastic shift from the era of "gatekeepers" where media filtered audience responses to the current digital age where "each individual has access to exhale and express without any inhibition."

The renowned filmmaker asserted, “In this digital age, each individual has access to exhale and express without any inhibition with her or her responses to anything more popular. Any entertainer or storyteller or filmmaker has never been more vulnerable, at any point in history, as it is today.” Bhatt questions the imposition of a singular vision for the world, calling it a "utopian idea."

He explained that there is a need to understand the current landscape of immediate and often emotionally charged public reactions. He added, “They’re dealing with responses which can flare up emotions and then what you have spent a sizable amount of your time on your life making is knocked off the air right now. Whether that should be done or not be done. That’s for the esteemed judges of the courts to decide.”

While acknowledging the potential for accidental offence, Bhatt believes filmmakers possess an internal "sensor" and platforms like Netflix implement safeguards. He asserts that no artist deliberately aims to hurt sentiments, advocating for responsible creation within the existing legal framework.
