Actor–artist Lekha Washington has reacted with humour after facing online trolling over her inter-faith relationship with Imran Khan. The couple, who generally keep their personal lives private, were recently seen together at the premiere of Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, after which some social media users targeted their relationship.
Lekha addressed the backlash in a video posted on Instagram, responding to the comments with a sarcastic take on the accusations.
“Love Jihad – apparently it is being done to me, a part Burmese, Italian, Punjabi, raised in south India, moved to north India with a dad who’s Roman Catholic but agnostic persona (is being love-jihaded by) a guy who’s father is part Hindu part Scottish and a mom who is Muslim,” she said in the video, pointing to the varied cultural backgrounds in both families.
She added that she does not take such remarks seriously and instead treats them with irony. “So I am like, ‘Do Na Love Jihad,’ and I say, ‘No, no. Instead, I make lights’.”
Her response quickly drew attention online, with many users noting the light-hearted tone in which she handled the trolling. Neither Lekha nor Imran has publicly spoken in detail about their relationship, and both have largely kept their personal lives out of the spotlight.
Their recent appearance together, however, has renewed public interest, even as Lekha’s remarks underline her choice to respond to criticism with humour rather than confrontation.
