Veteran actor Imran Khan has opened up about his personal journey with mental health and marriage, revealing that his split from ex-wife Avantika Malik ultimately allowed him to focus on his well-being.
Imran and Avantika, who first met as teenagers and married in 2011, welcomed their daughter Imara in 2014. However, the couple parted ways in 2019 after nearly a decade together. In a candid discussion with the Times of India, the actor described their relationship as becoming “unhealthy” over time, a factor that weighed heavily on his emotional state.
Reflecting on why he chose to end the marriage, Imran told the publication, “It was a relationship that started at a very young age. You don’t have nearly enough life experience to have an understanding of what healthy interpersonal dynamics are and what unhealthy dynamics are.” Contrary to speculation that the divorce worsened his mental health, Imran stressed that ending the relationship was a turning point in his healing process. He explained that separating from an unsupportive situation enabled him to grow emotionally and regain stability.
Since the separation, Imran has focused on co-parenting his daughter and rebuilding his personal life. He is also in a stable relationship with actress Lekha Washington, and has begun a gradual return to films, including a recent cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and an upcoming project Adhoore Hum Adhoore Tum opposite Bhumi Pednekar.
