August attendees at the posh Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2025 in New York suddenly heard the sound of Lata Mangeshkar’s timeless melody ‘Tere mere beech mein kaisa yeh bandhan anjana’. The chartbuster is from the 1981 super hit Ek Duuje Ke Liye, as the high-profile models grooved to the beats of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal composition.
This unexpected ode to the Nightingale took the audience by surprise. Indian attendees erupted into a storm of applause, as the beautiful ladies waltzed on the ramp to the sound of song and voice, which every Indian in any part of the world knows and venerates.
This is the first time an Indian song has been used at any renowned international fashion show.
Veteran actress Rati Agnihotri, who lip-synced the song in Ek Duuje Ke Liye, is over the moon. “What an honour! I was so lucky to have the great Lata ji sing for me in my very first film. 44 years down the line, the song is still hummed and remembered. Each time Lataji’s ‘Tere mere beech mein’ plays in some corner of the world, I am also remembered. And to now have the song as part of such a prestigious event… this is what true art is all about… timeless, borderless.”
