Actor Kunal Kemmu has shared his perspective on the ongoing discussion around pay structures and working conditions in the Hindi film industry, highlighting the practical realities that influence remuneration in filmmaking.
Speaking about the ongoing pay debate in the film industry, Kemmu said that compensation often depends on several factors, including the economics of a project and the market value actors bring to it. The conversation comes at a time when discussions around pay disparity, working hours and professional expectations have gained traction in Bollywood. Sharing his views on the business side of filmmaking, Kemmu said, “It’s easy to make choices with someone else’s money,” referring to the financial responsibilities that producers and studios shoulder while backing a project. His comment reflects the argument that filmmaking decisions are often tied to budget constraints and the potential return on investment.
Kemmu also pointed out that the industry’s demanding work culture is something most professionals are aware of before signing on to projects. “You can’t suddenly say you want to work less and get paid more midway,” he remarked, indicating that commitments made at the beginning of a film should ideally be maintained throughout the process.
The actor’s remarks come amid a broader conversation within the industry about balancing creative work with fair compensation and manageable schedules. While some voices have called for reforms in pay structures and working hours, others have highlighted the financial realities that shape decisions in the film business.
Kemmu, who began his career as a child actor, later transitioned into leading roles in Hindi cinema. Over the years, he has appeared in several films across genres, including Kalyug and Go Goa Gone. More recently, he also made his directorial debut with the comedy film Madgaon Express.
