While Saif Ali Khan has won hearts with his versatile characters that ranges from romantic to grey to antagonist, there was a time when he believed that his acting career was over even before it started. For the unversed, Saif was signed opposite Kajol as the two star kids were expected to make their debut together in the 1992 romantic drama Bekhudi. Opening up about how he lost the film on Koffee With Karan 8, Saif Ali Khan revealed how it had impacted him whereas his mother Sharmila Tagore revealed that she too intervened in the matter but it did not help him.
For the unversed, Bekhudi marked the debut of Kajol in Bollywood and featured Kamal Sadanah in the lead role. Recalling memories of the film to Karan Johar in the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 8, Saif Ali Khan said, “Well, actually Rahul Rawail had signed Kamal Sadanah first and then replaced him with me”. He continued, “I don’t want to blame him, but he did chuck me out of the movie because he found that I have an attitude. He said, ‘You’re quite good. People will think it’s because you’re not good, but it’s because I want you to be more committed and more professional.’ I thought I was, but he didn’t think so.”
At this point, mother Sharmila Tagore revealed that she too tried to convince Rahul to get Saif back into the film. “I rang him also. I said, ‘Please consider it because it is going to harm him (Saif) a lot.’ He said, ‘Nahi, Sharmila ji, I just feel…’ So I didn’t push it,” she added.
Although Saif Ali Khan and Kajol did not do their debut together and Saif later debuted in 1993, the two of them worked together in films like Yeh Dillagi, Hamesha, Bambai Ka Babu, and the recent Tanaji: The Unsung Hero.
