Filmmaker and Aamir Khan’s ex-wife Kiran Rao recently opened up about her experience of co-parenting their son, Azad. Since their separation in 2021, the duo has worked to create a harmonious co-parenting structure that supports Azad’s upbringing. Kiran shared the details of this journey on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s chat show, What Women Want, where she offered insights into how their dynamic has evolved.
Kiran Rao reveals co-parenting son Azad with Aamir Khan is “much smoother” after three years of separation“It’s Much Smoother Now,” Says Kiran on Co-Parenting with Aamir
During her appearance, Kiran reflected on the initial challenges of co-parenting, particularly due to Aamir’s demanding work schedule. "It’s tricky," she admitted, adding that, even during their marriage, she managed much of the primary parenting herself. She shared that their separation prompted Aamir to take a more active role in Azad’s life. "Once we got separated and then divorced, I think Aamir also sort of realised how much of that he will have to factor into his life," Kiran explained.
This increased involvement has been beneficial, especially now that Azad is older and able to bond more deeply with his father. According to Kiran, this transition has been “much smoother” with time, making it possible for her to “relax and leave Azad with Aamir.”
Aamir Khan Chooses to Stay Away from School-Related Matters
Kiran noted that while Aamir has become more engaged in parenting, he avoids handling any school-related responsibilities. “Only Aamir knows nothing about school,” she laughed, explaining how he prefers to contribute to Azad’s life in other ways. “I think it’s majority of the dads’ problem. They are always like, ‘Don’t get us involved in school-related activities, we will take up other things’,” she added.

In her talk with Professor Shakuntala Banaji and NISAU UK’s Sanam Arora, she discussed her dedication to storytelling that pushes boundaries in Indian cinema.
