As Kesari completes seven years since its release, director Anurag Singh has reflected on a major challenge faced during the making of the film. The historical war drama, headlined by Akshay Kumar, went on to become a significant entry in the genre of patriotic cinema and continues to be remembered for its impact.
Speaking about the production phase, Singh recalled an unexpected incident that disrupted the shoot of the film’s climax. “Our set of Kesari caught fire. We still had almost 15 days of shoot left when the fire broke out. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and there was only financial loss,” he shared.
Despite the setback, the filmmaker emphasised that the support from the producers helped the team stay focused on completing the project. Backed by Akshay Kumar along with Karan Johar, the film managed to resume work without major delays. “Akshay sir and Karan sir were my producers and both of them said whatever happened, happened. Let’s move on, let’s finish the film,” Singh added.
He further explained how the team adapted to the situation and reorganised the shoot schedule to ensure the film was completed. “We did another schedule. Akshay sir gave us fresh dates. We created another set in Film City, and the climax is actually shot in Film City and not Wai (Maharashtra),” Singh explained.
Recalling the experience, the director highlighted how the producers’ confidence played a key role in keeping the project on track. “And in this way, for a producer to back you like this, no worries, whatever happened we will figure it out, let’s build a new set and shoot, that dedication inspires you. It gives you extra energy when you realise your actor-producers are standing with you,” he said.
Released in 2019, Kesari was based on the historic Battle of Saragarhi and was noted for its scale, performances and emotional narrative. Over the years, the film has continued to resonate with audiences, with its music — particularly the song ‘Teri Mitti’ — emerging as a widely recognised patriotic anthem.
