Katrina Kaif opens up on why India felt like home despite initial challenges

en Bollywood News Katrina Kaif opens up on why India felt like home despite initial challenges

Katrina Kaif remarked that there was no way one would look at her and say that she was a Caucasian child.

With a career spanning over two decades, Katrina Kaif is one of the most famous names from Bollywood. But when she first appeared in films, audiences were critical of her Hindi accent. Katrina was born to Mohammed Kaif, an Indian Kashmiri man, and Suzanne Turquotte, a British woman. She also relocated to various countries as a child, which influenced her accent. Even though it took her some time to improve her Hindi, Katrina felt she belonged to India and that it was the best thing for her to relocate here.

In an old interview with Barkha Dutt, Katrina was asked if she felt disconnected from her Indian side after her parents divorced and her father didn’t remain in her life as much. She said, “I don’t think so because, you know, it’s such a basic thing to say that’ll probably sound very stupid but you must’ve seen it enough in your friends how you have very dark children who grow up to be very fair? I was a very dark child. There was no way you would look at me and say that this is a Caucasian child. I was always known as how exotic or how ethnic.”

“So, I was always aware of that and somewhere, I lacked a sense of belonging because I travelled to so many countries. By coincidence, those countries were the far east Hong Kong, China, Japan, France, very predominantly fair, white Caucasian countries. So that instilled it in me more. Which is probably why when I came to India, maybe other people would’ve gotten afraid that I’d just come to another country and landed up here. But probably for me, I felt such a sense of belonging because I realised that it just fit somehow,” she added.

The film Boom marked Katrina Kaif's debut in the acting world. Salman Khan may have helped Katrina in reviving her career, according to speculations. Her second Bollywood film, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, co-starring Salman Khan, established her as a well-known figure. She has not looked back since then. Her hard work, devotion, and enthusiasm have propelled her to become one of Bollywood's highest-paid actresses, with a reported net worth of about Rs 263 crores.

She is currently striving to collaborate with her favorite directors. She recently worked with Sriram Raghavan for the first time on the film Merry Christmas, which was released earlier this year. The film, which also starred Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathy, was based on Frédéric Dard's French novel, Le Monte-charge.
