Karan Johar's Koffee With Karan is one of India's most successful talk shows, but it wasn't always met with support. In a recent interview, Johar revealed that when he first shared his idea for the show with his close friends and family, they were not encouraging.
Koffee With Karan is known for its easy-going and candid conversations, but Karan admitted that he doesn't recall the exact inspiration behind the show's name or the concept of the rapid-fire segment. “Koffee With Karan is just about easy-breezy conversations. But I don't remember how I came up with the name or the rapid-fire segment. I don't remember anything,” he confessed.
Johar also discussed the origins of the show's name and popular rapid-fire segment. He said that he doesn't remember how he came up with either, but that Payal Mukherjee was among those responsible for creating questions for the early stages of the rapid-fire segment. Later on, this task was delegated to other people, including the production company SOL.
Johar also pointed out that he doesn't own Koffee With Karan. “It’s not my Intellectual Property (IP). Technically, they can do it with Karan Thapar too. If I leave, I can do ‘Conversation With Karan’, but I can’t ever do Koffee With Karan.”
Johar also shared his thoughts on the role of an interviewer. He expressed dissatisfaction with interviewers who adhere to a predetermined list of questions and rush through them without fully listening to the speaker's responses. “That is not what an interview is,” he said. “An interviewer is somebody who listens.”
Koffee With Karan has had a significant impact on Indian pop culture. It has helped to launch the careers of many Bollywood stars and has provided viewers with a unique glimpse into the lives of their favourite celebrities.
Speaking of his work commitments, Karan Johar recently returned to direction after seven years with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The film is declared as a box office success with it also garnering immense love for its portrayal of some unconventional subjects. Furthermore, it also features veteran stars like Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Shabana Azmi, along with other actors like Kshitee Jog, Anjali Anand, Aamir Bashir, Churni Ganguly, Tota Roy Chowdhury, among others in pivotal roles. The film released on July 28.
