Given that the hits produced by Bollywood this year can be countable on fingers, there is no denying that the year 2022 turned out to be the worst year for Hindi films. Among those few, it was Brahmastra that managed to create history. Speaking of the making of the film and the risk-taking aspects of it, director-producer Karan Johar recently recalled how Brahmastra gave him sleepless nights, and even drove him to the point where he was popping pills every night.

It all happened at the Master’s Union podcast, where Karan appeared to talk about the “Business of Bollywood”. KJo was asked to suggest a film he would have recommended as a case study to understand the different marketing concepts better. When asked for risk-taking, Karan was quick to say “Brahmastra.”

“That was one film that… I mean, Ayan was so busy delivering the film that the stress was on all the people around us. Like I literally popped a pill every night,” said the filmmaker.

Elaborating further, he added, “Even when there was praise and there was criticism and there were so many opinions flying around, I was just not ready. For the first time, I was like ‘Just tell me if you like it, otherwise I don’t want to know,’ because I was so defensive. I was so nervous so I became defensive.” Karan also stated that the film was made on conviction and “that’s why it did the money.”

Concluding his take, Karan said, “At that point of time, everybody was like, ‘What the hell are you doing? Why are you making a film with this person? He’s done nothing.’ He’s been an assistant on two films and in these films, it didn’t seem like he had anything. I said, ‘No, he has a ticking brain, he is a genius according to me’.”

Coming to the professional front, the 50-year-old director is gearing up for Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, releasing on April 28, 2023.
