Filmmaker Karan Johar has reflected on fame, money and legacy in cinema, drawing a sharp distinction between financial wealth and cultural impact in a chat with Sarthak Ahuja on his podcast.

Speaking about how the film industry is often perceived, Johar said, “Look, at the end of the day, what do we say about cinema? It’s naam bada, darshan chhota. You look at my bank balance; I am nothing as compared to a gazillion business heads. But there is a love that people have for the work we do; a legacy we leave behind. I leave behind stories. And that kind of glory you get cannot be monetized.”
With characteristic candour, Johar acknowledged that while the world of movies appears glamorous, the financial reality may not match the perception. By saying “naam bada, darshan chhota,” he underlined how cinema often carries immense visibility and prestige, even if the monetary scale does not compare with large corporate empires.
He further added, “My contribution to last 31 years, you can’t put money to it. I may live a certain life and project a certain lifestyle, but please look at my accounts. And then you will know, yeh kya hai? Yeh toh naam bada hai, darshan chhota hai.”
Johar’s remarks emphasise that his three-decade journey in Hindi cinema cannot be measured purely in numbers. While he may project a particular lifestyle, he urged people to separate perception from reality. For him, the true reward lies not in bank balances but in storytelling, cultural imprint and the emotional connection audiences build with films.
