Karan Johar gets candid on his partnership with Adar Poonawala.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has spoken candidly about the strategic partnership between Dharma Productions and entrepreneur Adar Poonawalla, describing the deal as a blend of business foresight and creative exploration.

Karan Johar on the future of his partnership with Adar Poonawalla, “I am sure at some point he is looking for an exit because…”

Opening up about the intent behind the association, Johar said on Sarthak Ahuja’s podcast, “I think this was a move towards diversification. But with him it’s a balance. I am sure at some point he is looking for an exit out of this deal because he is a businessman and this is a business, right? But I also think that he was the lover of the arts.”

He added, “But he is very clear. Maybe, the returns at that time after 8 or 10 years whenever he is looking at is magnificently huge. But it’s enough to have satiated his creativity or diversification need as well as given him that kind of glory.”

Johar’s remarks underline that the collaboration is not driven by emotion alone. He acknowledged that Poonawalla, known for his sharp business acumen, would naturally evaluate the investment from a long-term financial perspective. The possibility of an eventual exit, Johar suggested, is simply part of how business functions.

At the same time, Johar highlighted that the deal is not purely transactional. By calling Poonawalla “the lover of the arts,” he indicated that the partnership also stems from a genuine interest in cinema and storytelling. For Johar, this balance between commerce and creativity is key.

The filmmaker suggested that while significant financial returns may come years later, the association also fulfils a broader need for diversification and creative satisfaction. In his view, the deal represents both calculated investment strategy and an opportunity for artistic engagement, reflecting how business and cinema increasingly intersect in today’s industry.
