Actor Kajol spoke about the evolving space for women in digital storytelling at the Just Too Filmy Best of OTT Roundtable 2025, noting that success often became visible in subtle and unexpected moments rather than through box-office figures or headlines.

Reflecting on the release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kajol recalled a small yet telling incident that helped her understand the film’s widespread impact. “I was driving back from Film City and stopped at a signal. A truck pulled up next to me and the driver just looked at me,” she said. The moment, she added, made her realise that the film had connected deeply with audiences beyond conventional measures of success.
Thirty years later, with a statue of DDLJ unveiled at London’s Leicester Square, Kajol said the recognition still felt unreal. She noted that the film had been shot at the same location, and seeing a statue there highlighted how far Indian cinema and its stories had travelled across the world.
Speaking about her OTT journey, particularly with The Trial, Kajol observed that audience sensibilities had evolved along with her own choices. “Women are seeing themselves differently now,” she said, adding that when viewers recognised parts of their own lives on screen, the content felt more engaging. She pointed out that the growing number of women watching and engaging with OTT content was gradually shaping the kind of stories being told on digital platforms.
The Just Too Filmy Best of OTT roundtable also featured Sameer Nair, Vikramaditya Motwane, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Duggal, Bilal Siddiqui and Nagesh Kukunoor. The full episode is available to watch on the Hindustan Times and Just Too Filmy YouTube channels.
