Samant Chauhan’s contribution to the world of Indian textiles and fashion has been noteworthy. Born and raised in Bhagalpur, it was but natural that Samant would promote the luxurious Bhagalpur silk and uplift the talents of the skilled handloom weavers. Ace designer Samant Chauhan has been renowned for his skills in combining the beauty of his beloved Bhagalpur silk with modern silhouettes and weaving techniques. His “Ice Watch” collection was the grand presentation at the opening of the Atelier on Day One during Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI.

While the ensembles were an ode to the fragile beauty of the glaciers, it beckoned audiences with its ethereal allure and a poignant message echoing the vulnerability of glaciers. Elegant, yet totally functional, the inspiration of the glaciers was evident in the colour palette that moved serenely through shades of blue, white, and grey, which were delicately interspersed with bits of green and purple. The fabric story had to start with Bhagalpur silk, yet moved gracefully to organza and cotton silks for added elegant glamour.

Samant’s silhouettes have always bordered on feminine dreamlike shapes that women long for. There were swirling skirts that floated down the runway, while abstract forms and clever geometric patterns kept the artistry of the designs in firm control.

“I am thrilled to have showcased this season at Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI. The concepts of ice and glaciers were abstract to me as a child growing up in Bhagalpur. Throughout my life, these natural elements have continued to captivate me. This collection is a manifestation of my preoccupation with snow, and I hope the audience resonated with the messaging that I intended to showcase.”, added designer, Samant Chauhan.

Samant’s detailing for each garment was intense as he carefully added the emphasis for the necklines, which were feminine and sensuous. There was the off-shoulder version that vied for attention with the sweetheart, halter, and ‘V’ necklines. Sleeves were created in a range that moved from puff sleeves to Victorian, cape and even sleeveless. Embellishments have always been Samant’s forté as he worked with extreme beadwork, sequins, pintucks, quilting, ribbon, and hand thread embroidery. Samant’s ensembles have often been termed as wearable art as his silhouettes featured swirling lines, geometric patterns, and abstract shapes.

Bollywood’s hot star, Jim Sarbh stopped the very dramatic show in an all-white, layered, look. A regal floor-sweeping, flared, trench coat with fluid, impressive lapels, embellished with tonal embroidery and appliqués was worn over a mandarin collar shirt and white trousers.

Giving a choice of long, floor sweeping gowns, short frothy formal wear, jacket dresses, bodycon silhouettes and bridal trousseaux, Samant’s collection catered to every fashionable whim of the buyers. At every fashion presentation, Samant’s designing skills and experiments with weaves have promoted sustainable, fair trade practices, which have always been very evident.

The “Ice Watch” collection by Samant Chauhan was an ethereal line of ensembles that not only gave a strong fashion direction but focussed on the environment too.
