JAY B revels in personal growth in joyous smasher ‘Be Yourself’: Album Review

JAY B channels the inner Bruno Mars with the title track ‘Go Up’. The track is alliterated with claps and percussions as he speaks about living a worry-free life and going upwards in life. The music video is equally funky as the track as we find Jay B gallivanting around modern Seoul leading a laid-back lifestyle. With Break It Down, the musician creates slice-of-life imagery subdued with raw tones in the chorus. Sik-K brings a refreshing flair to this dreamy song with his rap verses. ‘Fountain of Youth’ gushes with energy. The song which is entirely in English creates an aura of a lively presence. The rhythmic percussions clubbed with alternate reverbs throughout the song cast a delightful charm on the listener.

‘Livin’ is the track you listen to when you’re truly feeling carefree. The smooth hip-hop beats feature in the song channelling the R&B and pop music scene is pretty much a modern era influence but also ingrained from past pop culture scenes. ‘The Way We Are’ is just the song to declare your uniqueness to the world. The synth-bass beats paired with electro beats add a delicious charm to the song.

The album concludes with the semi-divine track ‘Holyday’. He sings, “I gotta remind myself endlessly / Stop overthinkin’ / And just start dreamin’”. The musician shows his prowess in English once again with this track as he expresses his gratitude and also sends a message to the listeners to conquer the world. There are bass notes with stretched tones accentuated with occasional piano tunes that add a joyous bounce to the track.

In his eight-year-long career in K-Pop, JAY B has presents different facets of his musical genius. Each moniker of his invites the listeners for a new adventure. With his first solo album Def, he featured as Def. where he presented a sensuous side but with Be Yourself he presents us JAY B who paints a vibrant picture of living life in the moment and living it as honestly as possible.

The singer-songwriter-composer has given his fans a sneak peek into his thoughts with Be Yourself and at the same time has served a heartfelt note of gratitude to the GOT7 members and fans. As a producer, his EP is amalgamation of multi-genre sounds, while as a songwriter-vocalist, he gets to play with sonically beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Be Yourself definitely feels like a spring album and utter triumph in his discography. The 28-year-old soloist has a lot to share and this is just the starting!
