Kapoor observed that the internet thrives on virality and that public figures frequently become easy targets in the race for attention. “From what I understand about social media culture, is that everyone wants prominence, views and virality, so if they are making content about you, you’re just a scapegoat, they’re just using your name for clickbait, rage bait and whatever else it is to further their engagement,” she said.

According to the actor, recognising this dynamic helps create emotional distance from criticism. She explained that once one understands the intention behind such content, it becomes easier not to internalise it. “That’s the only purpose you serve, and once you look at it from that lens, you understand that what they’re saying about you has nothing to do with you. Then you start taking that less to your heart.”

Kapoor also spoke about how online discussions are often influenced by carefully crafted PR narratives rather than genuine opinions. She pointed out that in many cases, public discourse tends to follow predictable patterns that prioritise polarisation or popularity. “You either say something that everyone wants to hear or go with something that polarises that sentiment, or then there’s the paid positive-negative PR game that’s been headlining social media lately,” she said.

Reflecting on the larger ecosystem of digital commentary, Kapoor suggested that many individuals simply do what is necessary to maintain visibility or relevance. “Everyone’s doing what they have to, sab ghar chalane ki koshish kar rahe hai. You need to be transactional, nothing is that deep. It’s stupid to occupy your brain for more than five minutes with this.”

At the same time, the actor acknowledged that online criticism can sometimes cross the line into harassment. She spoke about witnessing such situations personally, particularly when the conversation turns into targeted bullying. “Of course, it hurts to feel misunderstood or when it turns into bullying and harassment, the way I’ve seen happen with my brother sometimes and there’s no excuse for that kind of behaviour,” she added.

Concluding her thoughts, Kapoor emphasised the importance of stepping away from toxic spaces rather than engaging with negativity. “Negativity fuels negativity and you just have to remove yourself from it.”
