Actor Janhvi Kapoor has candidly spoken about one of the most difficult phases of her life, describing the period following her debut film Dhadak as emotionally overwhelming. Appearing on the Raj Shamani Podcast, Kapoor reflected on grief, personal vulnerability, and the challenges of coping under constant public scrutiny.

Opening up about her mental state at the time, she said, “I was depressed after Dhadak. All of my validation in life came from my mom. She went away.” Calling the loss of her mother the most defining trauma of her life, Kapoor added, “The biggest trauma was losing my mom the way I did, in front of the whole world, and dealing with that journey. It’s such an individual experience that no one will ever understand.”
She acknowledged that while grief is universal, her experience as a public figure made it uniquely isolating. “Of course, many people lose a parent. I know I’m not the only one who has dealt with that at that age, but my journey in this space—no one will understand. So I don’t even bother explaining it,” she said, further adding, “Losing her was the worst thing. Apart from that—I’m talking about the consequences.”
Kapoor also spoke about how deeply dependent she had been on her mother, revealing how unprepared she felt to navigate life independently. “I was a very dependent daughter. I hadn’t exercised that muscle in my brain—the one used to make your own decisions. I depended on her for everything: what to wear, what to do, what to think, what’s right, what’s wrong, who I am.”
The sudden need to make her own decisions while facing intense public judgment compounded her struggles. “So suddenly learning how to make your own decisions and form your own opinions—while the world is ripping you apart… She’s smiling too much, she’s too morose, she’s not crying enough… making accusations about family dynamics… and dealing with all of that,” she shared.
Reflecting on that vulnerable period, Kapoor admitted to making mistakes in her personal life. “I made some bad decisions. I let people into my life who had no business being there,” she said, adding, “And they took advantage of me.”
She further acknowledged her own role in those experiences, stating, “How much people took advantage of me—and how much I let them. I wasn’t putting myself in a safe place. I was constantly compromising my mental and physical safety.”
Her candid revelations shed light on the emotional toll of grief compounded by public life, while also highlighting the importance of self-awareness and personal boundaries in navigating such challenges.
