Jab We Met’s re-release springs a surprise; collects more on Monday than Sunday; also BEATS Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in PVR

Jab We Met (2007), starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, is one of the most loved films of all time of Bollywood. More than a week ago, it came to light that it’ll be re-released in Valentine’s week in PVR Cinemas. Soon, there was an announcement that Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol’s love saga Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Titanic (1997)’s 3D version and Ranbir Kapoor’s Tamasha (2015) will also arrive in cinemas once again in the same week. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is the longest running film in Hindi cinema and has often done well when it has re-released over the years. For instance, it did well when it had a wide release in PVR, Inox and Cinepolis theatres on Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday in 2022. That was the day when it collected Rs. 23.04 lakhs, a huge amount for a film which is available on OTT and which has premiered on television several times.

Hence, even in Valentine's week, it was expected that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge would be the best-performing film out of the other two Hindi films. However, Jab We Met has managed to surprise. The film has been running with house full shows, prompting exhibitors to increase it's showcasing over the weekend.

That’s not all. Even on Monday, February 13, a working day, it managed to pull in audiences. Knowing that the demand will be much more to see the film on Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14, the multiplexes have further increased the shows. Believe it or not, PVR Oberoi Mall in Goregaon, Mumbai has decided to play 6 shows of Jab We Met today! PVR Juhu will play 4 shows. Even shows in PVR theatres in other cities like Delhi, Pune etc. have been increased and are fast-filling.

What has surprised the exhibition sector is that Jab We Met has now started beating Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in PVR. Jab We Met collected Rs. 2 lakhs on Friday. The collections then jumped to approx. Rs. 5 lakhs on Saturday while the collections on Sunday were Rs. 6 lakhs. On Monday, while the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge collected Rs. 6 lakhs, Jab We Met collected Rs. 6.5 lakhs in the multiplex chain. In other words, it earned more on Monday than Sunday. On Valentine's Day on Tuesday, Jab We Met is expected to further do well and might even cross the Rs. 10 lakhs mark. The gap in the earnings between the two films is further expected to grow due to an increase in shows in the case of Jab We Met.

It’s important to note here that while Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has released in PVR, Inox and Cinepolis, Jab We Met has only released in PVR theatres. And hence, the collections from only PVR are counted in the case of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge while doing the comparisons with Jab We Met.

An industry insider said, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has re-released several times. It continues to be played in Maratha Mandir and many have seen it in cinemas over the years. Jab We Met probably re-released for the first time after it completed its run in 2007-08. It has an insane fan following. People wanted to revisit it and also some viewers had missed it when it had released in cinemas in 2007. This could be a reason why Jab We Met is having such collections and has gone beyond Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.”

Meanwhile, Jab We Met will continue to be played in PVR cinemas till the end of the week, that is, until Thursday, February 16. Based on the response today, it is expected to have the same number of shows on Wednesday and Thursday as today.
