As Kyaa Kool Hai Hum marks 21 years since its release, Isha Koppikar is revisiting one of the most talked-about aspects of the film—her portrayal of Sub Inspector Urmila Martodkar. The 2005 comedy, produced by Ektaa R Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor and directed by Sangeeth Sivan, released on May 6 and went on to become a notable commercial success.
Looking back at the film’s impact, Isha shared how audiences often blurred the line between fiction and reality when it came to her character. "I've had people come up to me completely straight-faced and say they remember me from my police days. Not the film, my actual police days. They were entirely convinced Sub Inspector Urmila Martodkar was a real person, and that I had genuinely served," she said, adding with a laugh, "That character took on a life of her own, and honestly, twenty-one years later, she still hasn't retired."
In the film, Isha played a stern police officer tasked with tracking down the central character, but her entry also added a new layer of humour to the narrative. Her role became a key part of the film’s comic tone, with the character’s straight-faced authority contrasting with the chaotic situations unfolding around her.
Kyaa Kool Hai Hum was among the early Hindi films to explore adult comedy in a mainstream format, combining slapstick humour with situational comedy. The film featured an ensemble cast and was noted for its unconventional approach at the time, contributing to its popularity among audiences.
