Dabangg stays on to be one of the biggest hits of Salman Khan. However, it also gave Bollywood a leading lady in the form of Sonakshi Sinha. Though she had minimal role to play in the film, there has been a graduation of sorts that she has enjoyed in Rowdy Rathore. Though the film is again being hailed as a huge win for its men - Akshay Kumar and Prabhudheva - a fact that cannot be ignored is that with this even Sonakshi Sinha now has enjoyed two back to back huge successes with two 100 crore grosser in a row. Over to the girl who is indeed looking for some far more fabulous times ahead if her line up of films is any indication.
Guess you have been enjoying some really engaged and excited times, isn't it?
It has been a great year work wise. I am blessed to achieve so much in so little time. For someone who did not want to become an actor and had stayed away from it despite coming from a filmy background, it has been a very joyful ride. Dabangg happened accidentally and look where it has got me. When I did the movie I was not sure how it would affect me. However the role and script was so good that it turned everything positive for me.
However there was a gap of a year and a half between Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore. Didn't it ever occur to you that you had lost out on good time?
I don't think I lost out on any time after Dabangg. Everything has its time and place you can't force on anything. You get everything as per your destiny. I have been patient, a lot of good things have come my way and I have been doing good work. I give my 110% and have worked very hard to get here. Now that audience also has certain expectations of me, I owe it to them and want to ensure that they are happy.
Guess they indeed are happy. After all in Rowdy Rathore there was comparatively meatier part that you ended up playing.
Yes, of course but then I have absolutely no regrets with Dabangg. It has put me in a very good space and given me a lot. Now it's a natural progression as I am doing big films which are also giving me an opportunity to do new things. There is no reason to have any complaints. Earlier when I went out, people reminded me of the line 'thappad se dar nahin lagta, pyar se lagta hai'. Today, they sing along 'Chinta Ta Chita Chita'! It happens very rarely that you get fame for roles like these. Now it is time to look at even bigger roles and opportunities.
Well, you have been working with big stars for sure. First it was Salman, now it is Akshay.
Everyone knows that Akshay is a great co-star to have. He gives everyone a warm welcome, whether it's a cameraman, light man, spot boy or any other technician. He is good with everyone and that makes people open up on the set that leads to a very comfortable relationship. The same way he too helped me in opening up and that was the reason behind our on-screen chemistry being accentuated. It's fun to be in his company as he makes everything very simple. His relationship is good with his directors and producer and that reflects in his work.
How about your work in films to come? Just like Vidya Balan, do you to wish to stay in a 'Bhartiya Naari' mode?
No, there is no conscious effort in choosing such roles. I am not trying to be in a niche space here. I have never rejected any offer thinking that a character may be carrying Western sensibilities. When I read a script, it has to appeal to me and I have to be convinced of a character. Then it hardly matters if it's a Western or a traditional Indian character. Before signing any film, I never start fussing around the kind of clothes that I would be required to wear.
Your dances though have stayed on to be 'desi'. Can we see you getting into a club avtar anytime soon?
(Smiles) Why not? I am an actor and have already prepared myself to do all kind of dances. Give me a modern contemporary dance number and I would be happy to jive along. It depends upon a filmmaker to bring it to me!
