On January 7, in a rare instance, Hrithik Roshan interacted with media like never before to celebrate 25 years of his acting career and also 25th anniversary of his debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000). The venue was filled with excited journalists and as soon as the superstar entered, there was a wave of excitement.
Hrithik Roshan was given a microphone and he gave a heartening speech. He began by saying, “25 years ago, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was released. At that time, I was so shy and so anxious. I didn’t do a single interview. I didn’t step out of my house. I skipped the entire promotion and waited for the release of the film.”
A journalist remarked, “And you were surrounded by big films!” Hrithik replied, “Indeed. Thank God, bach gaye hum log!” Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was released a week after Aamir Khan’s Mela and a week before Shah Rukh Khan’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani.
Hrithik Roshan continued, “25 years has passed and unfortunately, that side of me has still not changed. I am just as shy.” This is when his mic stopped working. Hrithik quipped, “Not great for a shy guy! The mic needs to work for someone like me.”
Once the microphone started working, he added, “I am just as shy and just as anxious.” When someone said, “You are always a good actor too.” Hrithik flashed his lovely smile and said, “Well, thankfully, I’ve learned!”
He then said, “I am not giving speeches. You guys know me. It’s been 25 years. I don’t like words like ‘legacy’ and ‘milestones’. And I am not here to say ’25 years…yeahh’! I am not doing that. This is really an excuse and an opportunity for me to say things to you that I probably have never said in these 25 years.”
The mic kept getting shut in between, leading to laughs from the media as well as Hrithik.
The Greek God of Bollywood then said, “I didn’t even need cameras.” Some journalists offered to stop recording but he said, “That’s okay. That’s your prerogative. I wanted this to be a human-to-human message to you not just to say ‘thank you for your love and support’. But I feel that all of you have helped me become the human and the actor that I am in these 25 years through our interactions and through the questions and answers. You have made me feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, you made me feel responsible. Sometimes you made me feel accountable. You have helped me search inside myself as to what kind of human I want to be in this world. Apart from that, it is your words that people understood me. It is you speaking to them and telling them how to see me and how to understand me. Thank you for that, for contributing so much to my journey.”
He ended by saying, “This is not about me. Today, it’s about you. I want to do something I’ve never done – I want to sit and have a drink with you guys! Happy New Year and let’s get the party started!” As expected, there was a loud hoot from the journalists.
Hrithik Roshan then went and sat at every table and talked to journalists about his journey, his films and a lot more. After every interaction, Hrithik clicked pictures with the journalists and had a brief interaction with them.
This is truly going to be a month of Hrithik and his family. On January 10, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai will re-release. It’s also the day when the superstar would celebrate his birthday. On January 9, he, Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan would launch the trailer of their Netflix documentary, The Roshans. It’ll premiere on January 17. Lastly, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’s 25th anniversary will fall on January 14.
