House of the Dragon showrunner explains 10-year time jump with Emma D’Arcy & Olivia Cooke’s arrival

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal on Episode 6’s big time jump and recasting of female lead roles.

House of the Dragon’s Episode 6 – which premiered on Sunday – starts with a major time jump of 10 years into the future and accordingly, the show replaces its younger actors with adults. Well, Ryan Condal – the showrunner for the Game of Thrones prequel series – finally explains the reason for such major time leaps.

House of the Dragon showrunner explains 10-year time jump with Emma D’Arcy & Olivia Cooke’s arrival

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the season’s biggest time jump happened Sunday night, with episode 6 opening with Emma D’Arcy (30-years-old) and Olivia Cooke (28-years-old) replacing Milly Alcock (22) and Emily Carey (19) for the female lead roles of Rhaenyra and Alicent, respectively.  The reason for the switch is that the show had to open with the leads as teens during certain key events in their lives (such as Alicent marrying her best friend’s father, the King, and Rhaenyra being named heir to the Iron Throne). But the latest 10-year jump won’t be the show’s last.

“Then jumping forward to this new time period felt like the right thing to do,” Condal, who is now the sole showrunner for the show, told Variety. “A lot of the storytelling that happens in 6 — which is done brilliantly by Sara Hess, who wrote the script, and Miguel, who directed it — is being told in the things that you’re not seeing happen and the characters who are now there and the characters who are missing. All of these things imply the passage of time, and I think a smart audience who is leaning forward and paying attention will pick up on those things and understand quite a bit has changed since last we left these characters."

House of the Dragon airs every Monday on Disney+ Hotstar.
