While speaking to Vicky Lalwani, writer and former actor Honey Irani opened up about her marriage to lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar, their relationship after separation, and why their marriage couldn’t last long.
Before marrying actor Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar was married to Honey Irani. The two met on the sets of the 1972 film Seeta Aur Geeta. Honey was acting in the film, while Javed was one of its writers. “The first thing I noticed about him was his sense of humour. He had a lot of knowledge,” she shared.
Talking about their marriage, Honey admitted she still doesn’t fully understand why it didn’t work out. “I don’t know why it didn’t work,” she said honestly. According to her, success played a big role in changing things. She explained that fame and professional growth can change a person, and in Javed’s case, it did. She also pointed out that his drinking became a major issue during their marriage. However, Honey was clear that she does not place all the blame on Javed. She acknowledged that she was very young and immature at the time. In fact, she feels that if they had waited and been more settled, they might not have even gotten married.
Honey also spoke about her relationship with Javed after their separation. She said things improved between them after three to four years. “He was always supportive of the children and me,” she said. While it took her time to accept Javed’s second wife, Shabana Azmi, Honey added that with time, she found peace. “Once you have separated, then what is the problem? Why be angry or cry?” she concluded.
