Helly Shah is set to explore a new creative space as she headlines Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy series Chumbak. The show was officially unveiled at Netflix Day, where Shah appeared alongside co-star Arjun Bijlani and the ensemble cast in a playful skit that offered a glimpse into the tone of the series.

Known largely for intense and emotionally driven roles on television, Chumbak marks a clear tonal shift for Helly Shah. The actor will be seen in a light-hearted, contemporary rom-com, paired opposite Arjun Bijlani in what is being positioned as a fresh on-screen collaboration. Staying true to its title—Chumbak, which translates to “magnet”—the series centres on unexpected attractions, witty exchanges, and the everyday push-and-pull of modern relationships within a neighbourhood setting.
The project also brings together a creative team synonymous with some of India’s most enduring comedies on television. JD Majethia and Aatish Kapadia, the duo behind cult favourites such as Khichdi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai helm Chumbak. Their reputation for character-driven humour and sharp observational writing has raised expectations for a series that aims to balance comedy with emotional warmth.
Speaking about the project, Helly Shah described Chumbak as deeply personal. “Chumbak is very, very special to me. Firstly, because it’s with JD sir and Aatish sir, with whom I did my first-ever show as a lead 14 years back. And secondly, it’s with Netflix—something that I have been manifesting for so long, and now it’s finally happened,” she said.
The actor also admitted that comedy has pushed her out of her comfort zone in unexpected ways. “I can say that this is one of the most difficult and different projects for me till date. It’s comedy, and people will see me in a completely different avatar. Playing this character has brought out a very different side of me, and I’ve gotten to explore so much under the guidance of Aatish sir. I couldn’t be more grateful,” she added.
Helly further highlighted the collaborative energy on set, crediting the ensemble cast for shaping the experience. “I feel we have one of the best ensembles, and we all have a blast while making this show, which makes it even more wholesome,” she shared. Reflecting on the genre itself, she noted, “It’s very refreshing that we’re coming up with something so fun and light-hearted at a time when such shows aren’t being made as much.”
With Chumbak, Helly Shah continues to expand her digital portfolio while consciously stepping into genres she hasn’t explored before. Backed by seasoned comedy creators and positioned as a contemporary rom-com, the Netflix series is expected to present the actor in a noticeably different light, both in performance and tone.
