This year, Meghna Gulzar returns to the director’s chair with Daayra, bringing together two powerhouse performers – Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Interestingly, unlike her previous six films, all of which featured songs penned by her father, Gulzar, Daayra will break tradition. For the first time, the legendary lyricist has not written for his daughter’s film. This was confirmed by Gulzar last month and he further said that Daayra will be a song-less flick.

Speaking to Hindustan Times in January 2026, Gulzar was asked if the audience would see him working once again with Meghna in Daayra. He replied, “She said that her script doesn’t allow for any songs. So, that collaboration will have to wait.”

Meghna Gulzar’s earlier directorial ventures include Filhaal (2002), Just Married (2007), Talvar (2015), Raazi (2018), Chhapaak (2020) and Sam Bahadur (2023). Daayra marks her third collaboration with Junglee Pictures after Talvar and Raazi.

Meanwhile, in the same interview with Hindustan Times, Gulzar revealed that he has penned lyrics for a children’s film titled Masab Tank. The 91-year-old explained why the film has been so named, “Masab Tank is an area in Hyderabad where children’s playgrounds have been taken away and replaced by buildings. This project really touched my heart.”

He also explained why writing for films aimed at children matters deeply to him, “It’s not just a desire or an ambition, it is an obligation. Unfortunately, it is treated in a very left-handed way by writers.”

Gulzar also fondly remembered his protégé, Vishal Bhardwaj, with whom he has frequently collaborated on films directed and produced by the latter. He said, “I hope Vishal continues making films for children like The Blue Umbrella (2007). He has that rare sensitivity required to create songs that truly connect with children.”

Gulzar and Vishal had earlier worked together on the iconic children’s track ‘Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai’ from the television series ‘The Jungle Book’.
