In a throwback chat that’s resurfacing and making fans nostalgic, Bollywood’s beloved entertainer Govinda surprised many when he spoke openly about a confusing chapter in his love life. Long before he established his footing in the film industry, Govinda was in a serious relationship with Sunita Ahuja and they eventually got engaged. But as his career gained momentum in the late 1980s and early 1990s, things at home began to strain.
The Coolie No. 1 star revealed in a Stardust interview that work pressures and frequent fights took a toll on his bond with Sunita. Govinda said Sunita would often complain, and he would lose his temper whenever she spoke about his closeness with Neelam Kothari, the actress he had fallen in love with. Govinda admits that in one heated argument, he actually called off his engagement with Sunita and told her to leave him. Looking back, he said that if Sunita hadn’t phoned him five days later to patch things up, he might well have ended up marrying Neelam instead.
The actor also confessed that he made mistakes along the way, especially in how he handled his relationship with Neelam. He disclosed that Neelam didn’t even know he was married for nearly a year because he kept his wedding to Sunita private, fearing it might affect his career and their successful on-screen pairing. He admits he “played dirty” by not telling her the truth.
Govinda has called Neelam the “ideal girl” he once dreamt of being with, but says in the end, his sense of duty kept him with Sunita. Despite those early ups and downs, the couple went on to marry in 1987 and have stayed together for decades.
