Two years since the release of her last Korean drama When The Weather Is Nice, the queen of office romances, Park Min Young, is back. She stars alongside rising star Song Kang in a slow paced gleeful drama Forecasting Love and Weather. The drama premiered on February 12, 2022 and simultaneously airing on Netflix. This workplace drama is about two people who work at the Meteorological Department and eventually fall in love. There is an obvious age gap between the leads, which also pits this drama into the ‘noona [older woman] romance’ category to certain extent. Helmed by director Cha Young Hoon of When Camellia Blooms Bloom and writer Kang Eun Kyung of The World of Married and Misty, the story has begun smooth-sailing beginning. Let’s find out how the show weathered over the weekend.
THE CHARACTERS
The first episode ventures into introducing the main and supporting characters in the drama. We have a stoic female lead, Jin Ha Kyung (played by Park Min Young) who always goes by the book in her work. The male lead, Lee Si Woo (played by Song Kang) is her opposite for he goes by his gut. He is playful where she is practical, she keeps herself in check where he is free-spirited. The supporting characters are, Han Ki Jun (played by Yoon Park) – Ha Kyung’s former fiancé who unceremoniously cheated on and dumped her only to marry Chae Yoo Jin (played by Yura) – Lee Si Woo’s former girlfriend.
Each character has their own strengths and weakness. The team at the weather forecast office is set of quirky characters. There are people of contrasting opinions, but they still get along. There are veterans and rookies in the team, and all other people who work to get the accurate information out in the masses.
THE PLOT
Drama like Jirisan showed the raw and rugged side in the career of the mountain rangers. Forecasting Love and Weather takes the idea ahead and shows how the weather forecasters analyze the weather phenomenon and address the situations in a fast-paced environment. Millions of lives and money depend on the weather forecast, and a slight miscalculation can hamper tremendously. The drama does not see the situation through a rose-tinged lens. It makes an attempt to show the situation and the repercussions as close to reality as possible. Of course, there is an element of dramatic effect to enhance the viewing experiences, but that does not take away much from the reality.
The romance has begun almost smoothly barring a few initial hiccups, with an occasional hint of comedy in between. There’s a different start to the romance between the lead couple, owing to the fact that they were acquainted more closely after getting dumped by their respective exes. If the teaser for the next episode is anything to go by, there will be a shower of mushy and cheesy moments, with perhaps undercurrent of workplace boundaries threatening to thunder upon the budding chemistry.
The graphics and the CGI used in the drama blend in seamlessly, without being alienated. The workplace setting is spotless, with huge screes and analysis charts adding to the image of a stressful and intense working condition. The weather changes and anomalies are dramatized to an extent, but are often supported by fact checked numbers and algorithms.
VERDICT
If you are looking for a drama which gives you a workplace romance story, along with life lessons, then Forecasting Love and Weather is the one for you. It is also interesting to see how things go about in the weather forecast departments. If the two episodes are anything to go by, then there will be more nail-biting situations related to weather anomalies. The small yet meaningful life lessons in each episode are a treat. Not just the main lead, but other relationships depicted are awkward, realistic, and come from a hurt carried on for long. It will be interesting to see how these relationships and these characters take shape in the forth coming episodes. Keep a few tissues and cozy blankets handy!
