Actor Fatima Sana Shaikh recently opened up about experiencing a seizure while shooting for Dangal, recalling how her co-stars Aamir Khan and Sanya Malhotra helped manage the situation on set. Shaikh spoke about the incident during a conversation with Soha Ali Khan on the show All About Her, where she discussed her journey with Epilepsy and the challenges she faced before receiving a diagnosis.
Recalling the moment on the film’s set, Shaikh said she initially tried to brush off the symptoms before realising that something was seriously wrong. “It came, and I was like, ‘Nahi, nahi, kuchh nahi, ho jaayega’. And then badhta gaya, badhta gaya. Jo bhi mere aas-paas tha, maine bola mujhe seizure aane waala hai. Kisi ko pata hi nahi kya hai. Mujhe bhi nahi pata kya hai,” she said.
The actor explained that the team around her quickly tried to understand what was happening. “And luckily Aamir tha aur Sanya Malhotra thi, Kripa Shankar Bishnoi jo humein train kar rahe the, woh the… and fatafat Google kiya, unko answers mile, un logon ne side pe rakha, jo bhi hua. And then eventually, I think as a production house, they took it upon themselves to figure out what this is because a lot was riding on me, the whole film.”
Shaikh added that the production team later ensured she received medical attention and underwent several tests. “They took me to a doctor, they did all the MRIs, they did EEG, sab kuch. They took me to a neurologist in Bombay at that time. He put me on medication.”
However, she said the medication initially had strong side effects. “It was a medication that was just too much for me. Aisa lagta tha that I'm under the influence. So I couldn't walk straight, everything was wonky. I was feeling very depressive and angry. I was all the time very angry and sad. I felt very alienated.”
For the unversed, Shaikh first publicly spoke about living with epilepsy in November 2022 through a social media post aimed at spreading awareness about the condition. In the post, she also shared facts about epilepsy, including that one in 26 people may develop the disorder and that many individuals living with it do not always know the underlying cause.
Since then, the actor has continued to speak openly about the condition, using public platforms to encourage awareness and understanding around epilepsy.
