Fatima Sana Shaikh is redefining what partnership means to her, and she’s doing so with refreshing clarity. In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, the actor spoke candidly about how her expectations from a romantic relationship have evolved over time.

“Earlier, I wanted my partner to be my friend, my lover, my lawyer… everything,” she shared, reflecting on a phase when she expected one person to fulfil multiple emotional and practical roles in her life. Like many people navigating love in their twenties and early thirties, Fatima once believed in the idea of an all-encompassing partner — someone who could double up as confidant, advisor and emotional anchor.
However, experience and self-work have shifted her perspective. “Now, I don't expect my partner to be my therapist because I go to an actual one,” she said, underlining the importance of professional mental health support. Instead of placing the burden of emotional processing entirely on a partner, she has chosen to seek help from trained experts and industry insiders when needed. “Instead of getting upset that he's not understanding the intricacies of why I want to be a part of a film, I’d reach out to someone who is in the know,” she explained.
For Fatima, love today is about something more defined and less overwhelming. “All I expect from a lover is a very specific kind of friendship and understanding,” she stated. The emphasis is no longer on one person being everything, but on mutual respect, companionship and emotional awareness.
Her evolved outlook reflects a broader cultural shift — one where boundaries, therapy and individuality coexist with romance.
