The biggest hit of Hindi cinema – Dhurandhar The Revenge – ends on a novel note, showing the protagonist undergoing immense training while the song ‘Destiny - Mann Atkeya’ is played in the background. The song is sung by 21-year-old Vaibhav Gupta. He won Indian Idol 14 in 2024 and with this popular song, he has made his debut as a film singer. The young chap also performed at the grand music launch of Dhurandhar The Revenge. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Vaibhav Gupta spoke about the response to ‘Destiny - Mann Atkeya’, working with the film's team, and much more.
How has your experience performing at the grand music launch of Dhurandhar The Revenge?
It was great. When I went on stage, I saw a huge crowd and many people recording my performance. I had done stage shows before, but the experience that day was vastly different. I got to perform my debut song, that too at a music launch for such a big film. Ranveer Singh sir, Sara Arjun ma’am and Shashwat Sachdev sir were also there. Performing in front of them was a different feeling.
Ranveer sir gave me a lot of love. I went to meet him in his vanity van and he hugged me lovingly. He also hugged me on stage. It was a dream-come-true moment. I still see videos of that day and it makes me very happy (smiles). And later, Ranveer sir followed me on Instagram and sent me a wonderful message. That was like icing on the cake.
What did he write to you?
Let me read out his entire message. (Opens Instagram on his phone) He said, ‘God bless you, mere bhai, with more and more abundance and blessings. May Maa Saraswati always shine on you’. He’s one of the biggest stars today. Sabke dilo pe raaj karte hai. To receive such a message from him means a lot, especially for a boy who comes from a small town. Hence, I am feeling several emotions. Har subah, jab main uthta hoon, koi nayi feeling hoti hai (smiles).
I regularly read comments on YouTube, and I am blessed to see so many people showing me so much love. Even Reels are made of the song. Bahut maza aa raha hai.
Yes, I plan to, but before that, I’d like to release some more of my songs. Work is in progress. Once that is done, I’d like to announce a tour and perform in various cities.
Who is in your family and how have they reacted to your success?
I live in a joint family comprising 16-17 people. We all live together. They are over the moon. My mother was present at the album launch. She was secretly recording videos. It was a cute moment (smiles). I told her, ‘Aap khul ke videos bana sakte ho yahaan pe’! She was stunned when she saw Ranveer sir as she had only seen him in movies. Seeing them celebrating my success gives me even more joy.
My father is also happy. A lot of people come to his shop and tell him ‘Aapka beta celebrity ban gaya…film mein gaana gaaya’. They are clicking pictures with my dad! It means a lot that a boy from a small town is living his dream.
As per some reports, you are going to sing in the film based on Operation Sindoor. Is that true?
No. I also read about it and even I was surprised. I didn’t even know that a film of this name was announced. As of now, I haven’t been offered.
But I am sure you must have got several film offers after the success of ‘Destiny - Mann Atkeya’…
Yes. I am recording several songs. After winning Indian Idol, I was wondering if people would even appreciate my voice. I wondered ‘Kaisi moti si awaz hai, rusty si awaz hai’. Shashwat sir and Aditya Dhar sir had a vision to use my voice in such a way that it’ll astound people. And that’s what happened and they cleared my doubts.
I am also fortunate that the music industry has noticed my voice. Jinn kaanon tak meri awaz pahuchni chahiye thi, un tak pahuch gayi hai! Hence, you’ll soon get to hear my voice in many more films.
