While promoting Shabaash Mithu, Taapsee Pannu seems to be drawing parallels between what she faced in Bollywood and what Mithali Raj underwent as a cricketer. Speaking about the deep-rooted patriarchy in the system as well as within us as a community, Taapsee spoke about how Bollywood as an industry shouldn’t be blamed for its patriarchal approach, as the bottom line is that the audiences themselves prefer mass male-driven content over female-driven film that have to undergo the review test. Further speaking about her salary exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Taapsee maintained that every actor’s goal eventually is to ensure that their producers don’t lose money.
EXCLUSIVE: Taapsee Pannu talks about her salary; says, “Films don’t fail, budgets do. When i talk about my salary, i make sure that the producer does not lose money”
In her candid conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Taapsee Pannu spoke about leading lady’s remuneration, pay disparity and the current situation of female drive films. When she was speaking about the budget of a film, she also mentioned that her goal as an actor is to ensure that her producers don’t lose money. She said, “Films don’t fail but budgets fail. It’s a universal fact irrespective of whether its Bollywood or Hollywood. Your competition should be with your previous releases. The most important fact should be that your producers shouldn’t be losing money – this is true for an actor and actress. When I talk to my producer about my salary, it is my duty to ensure that I have to keep in mind that he doesn’t lose money.”
Furthermore, she revealed that she discusses the number before the film releases which is technically the major chunk in terms of a female driven film. However, in a male driven film, the remuneration that an actor receives after the film releases is also a key factor. “In terms of remuneration, after the release of the film which is highly risky since it depends on how the film fares, it is minimum when it comes to a female-driven film. Reason is that the producers are not sure of its performance as we cannot predict audience’s behavior when it comes to these film. In such cases, you need to safeguard your own amount (salary) even before the film releases.”
She also went on to add that in such cases an actress cannot demand a salary as per the standards set by a male actor. “I am not going to compete with something like that. My competition is with my previous releases. However, my eventual goal is where I want to reach a stage where my salary or rather the budget of the film does not depend on the gender of the protagonist,” concluded Taapsee.
