Actor Ankur Rathee has had two prominent shows releasing in the current month in the form of Single Papa on Netflix and Season 4 of Four More Shots Please! on Amazon Prime Video. The latter sees him reprise his character Arjun from the first three seasons.
Single Papa, on the other hand, is a fresh show. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Rathee expressed how proud he is to be a part of the web series, which stars Kunal Kemmu in the titular role. “I knew this show was an important step in changing the conversation around masculinity in our society,” he said. “It’s a vital balance to films like Animal, Kabir Singh, and Dhurandhar. Men are capable of more than just violence in this world. We’re capable of sensitivity, emotional intelligence, and ‘baapta’ as Single Papa underlines.”
Single Papa sees Ankur paired opposite the actress and internet sensation Prajakta Koli. “She’s inspiring. Prajakta seems to be firing on all cylinders, using her creative instrument in every which way. I think the world is yet to experience the symphony within her,” he said.
Coming to the latest season of Four More Shots Please!, Ankur said, “Anjana (Kirti Kulhari) and Arjun parted ways in Season 2, but their love was still so palpable. They didn’t want the same things in life back then, but now they’re in a different chapter of life. What happens when two exes meet after so long? Depending on their direction, magnets will either push each other away or snap back together.”
Ankur believes that it’s an honor to star in the show with all four main leads being females. “I’ve learned so much about my own male privilege by working on this show,” he said. “In a male-dominated film industry, I am blissfully unaware of what women have to go through. It’s only when the situation is reversed that I’ve gotten a mere glimpse what it could be like. We don’t have a lack of female talent in Bollywood; we have a lack of female opportunity.”

Ankur is also known for his Sony LIV crime thriller Undekhi. The fourth season of the show recently got wrapped up. The actor said that the new season will release “soon”. “I love stepping into ‘Daman’ (his character) every year. His transformation from Season 1 has been so dramatic. He represents righteousness in a very evil world, but survival means compromising his moral compass. Playing that struggle has been one of the most fun challenges of my career.”
When asked what he looks into a project before agreeing to be a part of it, Ankur gave a detailed answer. “I have no formula,” he said. “Sometimes reading the script is enough to jolt me into that cinematic world. Other times I need a lot more research and experimentation to find the ‘sur’ of my character. Usually in the first few days on set there’s a moment when it all clicks for me. In Single Papa, it was the dinner scene with Prajakta when I don’t realize Neha Dhupia is Mrs. Nehra. I initially played that scene more grounded, but then Hitesh (Kewalya, one of the directors) got my performance to be a pitch louder and more physical to match the tone of the show.”
Interestingly, Ankur has an international film lined up in the form of Netflix’s Best of the Best. He is, naturally, excited for this one. “It’s got some incredible names attached like Hasan Minhaj, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Lilly Singh. What excites me most about it is that it’s a dance film, my first!”
