Starting his music career by singing a small portion in Tamasha’s song ‘Wat Wat Wat’ with Arijit Singh to be the voice behind chartbusters songs such as ‘Mere Sawal Ka’ and ‘Show Me The Thumka,’ Shashwat Singh, in his words, has been lucky from the beginning. Recently, in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the 32-year-old rising singer spoke about different genres of music, remix culture, and more.
Starting the conversation with his take on hip-hop, Shashwat asserted, “I think hip-hop is the voice of the people basically. I feel there is no competition between the genres as all of them fall under the umbrella of music. Music can’t compete with music. It all co-exists. Not only in Mumbai, but across the country, hip-hop culture has seen a rapid rise. It has appealed to the youngsters.”
He further explained, “I think hip-hop has a bright future in this country and there are some amazingly talented people as well. I am very excited as well as hoping for some collaboration. In one of my upcoming projects, I have rapped as well. So, I personally like it and I listen to it as well.”
As the conversation progressed, Singh commented on the remix culture. He said, “In any legendary song, the melody is very important. Remix songs work out because of their recall value. I feel the original composer should get the credit first when you make the remix version. If someone is doing justice to the remix, it should work.”
When asked which genre is his favourite, Shashwat said, “I am a singer first and I love melody. Thus, I would prefer the traditional way of music making, where the song is prepared and then the singer sings it. That is my art and I have the skill set for that. But I am open to all kinds of collaborations and all kinds of music. Music is so wide, we can't distinguish and say this is right or this is wrong. If it exists, it has appealed to someone. But my personal choice, for myself, it's playback singing.”
Later, he also shed some light on social media followers and its relevance to an artist’s art. He said, “Social media is a part of everyone's life now, from our grandparents to the youngest member of our family. So, presence on social media is important, but judgement by numbers is not crucial, because it can vary. For example, if Virat Kohli had a lesser number of followers, does that make him a less good player? No, right?”
He concluded by saying, “So, your skill set is always important. Social media platforms will keep changing. There is a saying, a friend of mine had told me, which goes - the intention is more important than the content. So, the intention should be good. And just keep working. Though social media and success go hand-in-hand, there is no shortcut.”
