Kapoor revealed that he was the one who suggested parting ways with director Shekhar Kapur for his debut film Prem. He explained that while the first song of the film, 'Maine Jee Liya Mar Liya Prem Kar Liya,' had already been recorded, the shoot never commenced. Growing restless, Kapoor made the decision to move on, as Kapur seemed reluctant to start the project.

In 1989, they decided to part ways with Kapur, who had penned the script with Javed Akhtar. Kapoor mentioned that several directors showed interest in the film, but ultimately they chose Satish Kaushik, who was already directing Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja at the time. They began shooting for Prem in December 1989.

Unfortunately, various challenges further delayed the film. The cinematographer, Baba Azmi, contracted typhoid, and due to other production setbacks, Kapoor had to wait for two years. Eventually, they started shooting in 1993 after finishing Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.

Despite the delays, Kapoor shared that during that period, he signed other films, including Kartavya, Raja, and Chupa Rustam. As a newcomer, he found himself shooting for multiple films simultaneously, which turned out to be a positive outcome.
