EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta SLAMS Buy One Get One Offer: “It is BULLSH*T; the theatre owner makes his money while the producer loses money. Toh yeh karke kya matlab hua?”

en Bollywood News EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta SLAMS Buy One Get One Offer: “It is BULLSH*T; the theatre owner makes his money while the producer loses money. Toh yeh karke kya matlab hua?”

The Buy One Get One Offer (BOGO) offer has become a talking point in the industry, trade and among moviegoers. It involves giving one ticket free for every ticket bought by a moviegoer for certain days. The offer was first implemented for Vicky Kaushal-Sara Ali Khan starrer Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023). The film opened at Rs. 5.49 crores, much more than expectations. The model was hailed as a success and it was repeated for several other films. Since then, many from the industry, trade and even exhibitors have warned that the Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) offer is harmful in the long run. They fear that the viewers will get used to it and will wait for the scheme to be implemented. In the process, they might skip watching the film and hence, the producer will lose the potential audience.

During an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay Gupta was asked to comment on this scheme. The veteran filmmaker minced no words as he said, “BOGO is bullsh*t. It’s a way to increase the collections so that when you sit down to negotiate with the OTT platform, you can tell them, ‘Look my film made much’.”

He continued, “Buy One Get One Offer mein producer ka share kya aata hai? Does it not defeat the purpose? The theatre owner makes his money while the producer loses money. Toh yeh karke kya matlab hua? And why do we infuse such habits into the cinema-going audience? In the first week, the audience paid full price to watch a film. In the second week, the audience can get one ticket on every ticket free. Hence, those who saw the film in the first week are going to feel cheated. People will start thinking ‘Jab offer aayega, tab jaayenge’.”

Sanjay Gupta further said, “A correction in ticket prices and star prices is the need of the hour. If nothing else, at least charge according to the budget of your film. You can charge higher, citing that yours is an expensive film. It makes sense if tickets of Kalki 2898 AD are sold for Rs. 500, for instance.”
