EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan’s 20-year-old entertainer Garv comes to the rescue of the single-screen cinemas in North India; does reasonable business upon its re-release

en Bollywood News EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan’s 20-year-old entertainer Garv comes to the rescue of the single-screen cinemas in North India; does reasonable business upon its re-release

The business in cinemas at present is dismal due to a lack of significant releases. It is common to see many single-screen exhibitors re-releasing older titles, hoping that it clicks with the audience. Most of these experiments failed but the attempt to re-release Garv (2004), a 20-year-old film starring Salman Khan, has succeeded. Yesterday, Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, tweeted that Garv’s re-release has brought some respite for the exhibitors up North.

Bollywood Hungama spoke to Joginder Mahajan, who distributed Garv in North India. He told us, “We re-released it four weeks back.”

He made it clear that the collections are not huge, but the performance has come as a surprise. He commented, “The business is just fine. This is because the ticket rates in most cinema halls are around Rs. 150 or Rs. 250. If you are showing a re-released film, the rates can’t be so high. We informed cinema owners about it, but they refused to understand. Our main competition is TV and OTT. Hence, to entice audiences to cinemas, lesser ticket rates are crucial.”

He continued, “If ticket rates are slashed to Rs. 50 or Rs. 60, more people will come. The canteen sales will also increase. Earlier, average or small films also used to work due to this factor.”

Adding that he has released Garv in around 50 theatres, Joginder Mahajan explained what made him re-release this popular film saying, “It’s been 20 years since the film was released. And it was not digitized. We digitized it. Moreover, Salman Khan didn’t come with a film this Eid. Hence, we thought of releasing this film during the festival. It was Ultra’s decision. Also, Salman films do well in Delhi/UP.”

What also went in Garv’s favour is that it’s a complete masala fare. Joginder agreed, “Yes, the film has action, and it makes an important comment on the politics of the country. It’s ideal for the election season.”

As the new week begins tomorrow, Garv’s run will continue. Joginder Mahajan stated, “We’ll continue playing the film. From tomorrow, it’ll play in Varanasi, Ludhiana, Bulandshahr etc. Every week, it keeps playing in 5-6 centres.”

Ashutosh Agarwal, exhibitor and owner of Starworld Cinemas exulted, “Garv was released in Agra where it did reasonably good business. It hasn’t done business like Vijay’s film Ghilli, which was re-released recently.”

He continued, “The exhibitors have taken the film on fixed hire. And they were able to recover their investment.” When asked if the cinema owners were able to make a profit, he explained, “When exhibitors say that they have recovered, you can assume that they have even made a profit.”

Besides Salman Khan, Garv also starred Shilpa Shetty, Amrish Puri, Arbaaz Khan and Akanksha Malhotra. It was directed by Puneet Issar and was the story of an honest and daring cop.
