The first season of ZEE 5’s Duranga, which is adapted from the Korean show Flower Of Evil, was directed by Pradeep Sarkar. However, the filmmaker passed away earlier this year. The second season is helmed by the popular Hindi filmmaker Rohan Sippy.
EXCLUSIVE: Rohan Sippy opens up on directing Duranga Season 2, “I had some idea on how to work with someone else’s idea”
In an exclusive conversation, the filmmaker spoke about his experience of coming onboard the show. “I came on board to direct Season 2 because I have already worked with Goldie (Behl) and have had a great experience there,” he said. “I also have the experience of directing the second season of Criminal Justice. So, I had some kind of an idea on how it is to work with someone else’s idea. In this case, the first season was very successful, and I had some fun stuff in my mind for the second season. And the preparation for the second season was to understand what they are looking for, but most importantly getting a brief from Goldie and Charu (writer Charudutt Acharya) as to what is their vision for the show. And as far as challenges are concerned, it was to maintain the success and fandom of season one and try to improve as much as possible.”
Sippy was asked about the creative liberty he took on the script written by Goldie and Charudutt. In an extensive answer, he said, “My role was to execute their vision. The level of creative liberty I take in such cases depends on the project and the individuals involved. In this particular instance, the writing and vision were clearly established by Goldie and Charu. Having a clear brief is always beneficial, and it’s not so much about creative liberty as it is about enhancing their vision.”
Sippy added, “Goldie and I have a good working relationship, and we understand each other's direction, which makes our collaboration smoother. We aim to add valuable elements to the foundation they've laid out. However, the degree of involvement from writers and producers can vary. Goldie appreciates having someone as part of the team, and we strike a nice balance between executing their vision and incorporating additional elements.”
The first season of Duranga mostly starred Gulshan Devaiah and Drashti Dhami with Amit Sadh playing a cameo. In season 2, however, Sadh has a much meatier role. Sippy believes that these three characters set the show apart from the rest. “What sets Duranga apart from other psychological thrillers is the presence of three strongly defined lead characters, which infuses a unique tone into the series. This blend, combined with the psychological thriller aspect, creates an intense love story at its core. The fusion of these two intriguing genres is what gives Duranga its distinct edge. I hope people will choose to invest their time in watching Duranga for this reason,” he said.
