Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger has announced the nation’s heartthrob and style icon, Rashmika Mandanna as India’s first brand advocate. The brand is known for bringing forth the best of contemporary collections combining fashion with sports and heritage with innovation. With her stylish persona, playful vibe, and endearing energy, Rashmika resonates well with the brand ethos. She was present at Onitsuka Tiger’s Autumn/Winter 2023 showcase at the Milan Fashion Week wearing a head-to-toe look. How do you define your personal style?

I am a minimalist to the core, and I truly believe in comfortable fashion much like Onitsuka Tiger’s latest Autumn/Winter 2023 collection inspired by Urban Layering which is native to Japanese culture. I love the fact that their clothes are fashionable and comfortable, it is a hard blend to find these days.

From the latest collection, I absolutely love mega anoraks, the oversized coats made of crafted faux fur, tailored, oversized three-button jackets and coats. These items can also be worn on top of each other to make the silhouette voluminous, but less bulky.

Japanese minimalism is a perfect combination of style and comfort, exactly what I look for in my outfits.

What is fashion for you?

Fashion for me is all about being comfortable in what you wear and that ultimately translates into confidence. So, it is a mix of both as my fashion sense is really minimalistic but at the same time, I also want to make a statement in my simple day to day outfits.

Who are your style icons?

My mum and my grandmom have been the biggest inspiration for me with their kurtas and fabulous sarees.

What’s your wardrobe MVP?

I absolutely love the minimal colour palette of Onitsuka Tiger’s Autumn/Winter 2023 collection, starting with signature black to shades of grey, beige and flashes of pumpkin orange. The monochrome co-ord sets and the uber cool oversized three-button jackets and coats definitely stood out for me. Their stylish and lightweight sneakers are an absolute must haves in my wardrobe.

Baggy trousers made of nylon and melton, and quilted chiffon shorts layered over precious boxer shorts are the perfect choice to complete your look!

With the almost arrival of summer, what are some of the must-haves one can find in your wardrobe?

I totally love Onitsuka Tiger’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection! It is a celebration of Japanese minimalism defined by modern design. I am inspired by how the dresses that can be taken apart, and the jackets that can be worn with capes borrowed from trench coats. The colour palette, black and white interrupted by the signature yellow and shiso green, helps you make a statement with your ensemble. I do not like putting extra effort into what I wear and hence I resonate with the concept of Japanese minimalism.

What are the first items you gravitate toward when shopping?

I always look for the right pair of shoes, and I get immediately gravitated towards a colourful, chunky pair of shoes from Onitsuka Tiger.

How do you feel your relationship with fashion and style have evolved over the years?

I definitely think my relationship with style has evolved over the years. Sometimes it is good to make a style statement with your fashion choices but I also feel I have become much kinder to myself now as I find myself going for easy and comfortable looks over what’s trending.

You were are Milan Fashion Week 2023 and attended the Onitsuka Tiger show. It happened to be your first international appearance at a prestigious fashion week. What has been the experience like for you?

It was surreal! And to be there for a brand like Onitsuka Tiger, just added to the excitement and overall experience. I absolutely loved Onitsuka Tiger’s entire Autumn/Winter 2023 collection showcased at the Milan Fashion Week. The theme of the collection was “Urban Layering” representing the central part of Japanese culture - dressing in layers. The new AW23 collection builds on the essence of this Japanese tradition by filtering it through Onitsuka Tiger's sporty DNA - presenting a collection that, while maintaining its active spirit, is more focused on an urban aesthetic.

Knowing how big of a fan you are of Korean culture, you met South Korean actor Jung Il-woo. Did you happen to exchange any conversation or anything related to fashion at Onitsuka Tiger show? Interestingly, Thai actor Gulf Kanawut was also seated next to you guys. Anything you'd like to share?

I am an absolute fan of Korean culture. We all loved Onitsuka Tiger’s latest AW23 collection. I have always been fascinated by Japanese culture, as I have grown up watching Japanese anime. Dressing in layers is a central part of Japanese matched with oversized and flowing tailoring - another fashionable excellence from Japan. Has there been a red carpet moment that is meaningful to you because the look created catered to your personal style?

I recently sported an all-white look at the Milan Fashion Week. I really loved the look as it gave a very urban city style vibe that looks very elegant and was comfortable at the same time. I recently wore Onitsuka Tiger’s SCLAW & SCLAW MT shoes in Milan along with pants and a top, which gave my ensemble a very contemporary and fashion forward look.

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why?

I would definitely raid Deepika Padukone’s closet because I love her fashion style and her confidence that eventually comes with it!

What is your current fashion mantra?

My go to fashion mantra is not to go after trends but to wear what makes you feel comfortable and happy!

What do you miss about fashion in general? What do you think future of fashion looks like?

I really want to go back to a simpler era where we are not all running towards trends but creating our own fashion and style. The future of fashion to me should be more sustainable and eco-friendly, more inclusive and personalized based on one’s own style and comfort.
