Rajkummar Rao continues to make us believe that real talent will shine minus big budgets, fancy sets or industry mentors. Powered by the success of 2017, with films like Newton (India’s official entry to Oscars), Bareilly Ki Barfi and Trapped, the actor in 2018 delivered two power-packed yet completely contrasting performances in Omerta and Stree. While Stree went on to become the sleeper hit of the year, Omerta saw Rao get under the skin of dark twisted terrorist.
Interestingly, Stree released on Rajkummar Rao’s birthday last year and the actor was very hopeful that it might work with the audience. Talking EXCLUSIVELY to Bollywood Hungama, when asked how he felt after Stree became a sleeper hit, Rajkummar Rao said, “I think it is teamwork. You have to do your job in the best way possible. Everybody has to be on the same page. With Stree, it happened. The team was just trying to make a good film. I think when that happens; the product of the film comes out quite nicely. And that is what I am trying with all my films. For me, it’s having fun with everyone. It’s like being with a family for those few months and try and tell a story in the best way possible. We actors are just a part of it. It is bigger than that.”
It’s no wonder then that Rajkummar Rao is part of the 2019’s highly anticipated films including, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Mental Hai Kya, Made In China, Turram Khan and Imli. Although there is a lot of speculation around the love story of the film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Rajkummar said that one will get to know it eventually about it. In the film, Rajkummar is playing a theatre writer-director Sahil Mirza. Talking about his character and how he fits in the story, he added, “Sahil Mirza is someone who is a theatre writer and director. And he wants to do things on his own terms, doesn’t want to take anybody’s help and is someone who stands for what is right.
The actor is on roll as after Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga in February, Rajkummar Rao will be seen in a quirky film Mental Hai Kya in March 2019. The film will mark the reunion of Rajkummar and Kangana Ranaut after their success in Queen. Talking about the quirky posters and reuniting with the actress, the actor said, “We haven’t played such characters before. The film is very quirky and edgy. As you can see from the posters that it is something very different from what me and Kangana have done before. After Queen, a lot of people are probably quite excited to see us on screen. It was a lot of fun.”
