Pankaj Tripathi shared his thoughts on stepping into production and choosing YouTube as the platform for his latest project Perfect Family, during an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama. Known for his calm and grounded personality, Tripathi explained that becoming a producer brought a new kind of nervousness and responsibility.
He said, “I am bit of a quiet person anyway. I neither get too excited nor too discouraged. But yes, this responsibility is new to me, and that's why I am feeling a little nervous like a producer.” Tripathi added that, as an actor, he never thought much about viewership or feedback at the platform level, but this experience felt different because it was his first time being on the other side of the process.
The series has been made by producer Ajay Rai, with whom Tripathi shares a long-standing family friendship. He expressed full faith in Rai’s expertise, recalling his successful productions such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Chillar Party, Gurgaon, and Nil Battey Sannata. Tripathi noted that this project was special because it was the first web show releasing directly on YouTube in a paid format, calling it an experiment that could pave the way for new creators.
He explained that the series’ writer, Palak Bhambri, was making her debut with this project. “Generally, people know the characters of Mahabharata but do not know Ved Vyas. So, Palak Bhambri she is the creator. The story is the product of their mind,” he said. Tripathi believes that if this format succeeds, it will open doors for many young writers and creators to produce large-scale content on YouTube.
Why They Chose a YouTube Release
Tripathi also shared why the team opted for a YouTube release instead of traditional OTT platforms. He said that while the digital world has become democratic, platforms often impose creative restrictions. According to him, complete creative freedom was one of the biggest reasons behind choosing YouTube.
The YouTube release also provides a global audience and the opportunity to experiment with a new model. The team decided to offer the first two episodes for free, allowing viewers to choose whether to subscribe for Rs. 59 to watch the rest. Tripathi said, “Taking the risk of trusting the content, that's why we are showing two episodes giving the freedom to the viewers. Ajay had confidence in the content, wanted freedom and wanted to try this format experiment.”
He acknowledged that paid viewership is still limited in India but noted that it is popular in the West. With this series, the team hoped to make the first significant attempt in this direction. Tripathi concluded that whatever outcome emerges from this experiment will shape similar projects in the future.
The actor-producer’s thoughtful approach reflects his belief in creative independence and his willingness to support new voices in the industry, making this project an important step in the evolving digital landscape.
