EXCLUSIVE: Mission Raniganj maker Tinu Desai on making film on Uttarakhand miners’ rescue, “No such thought right now, but…”

Director of Mission Raniganj, Tinu Suresh Desai spoke about the challenges while rescuing miners from such situations.

Akshay Kumar starrer Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue recently started streaming on Netflix. Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, the movie is based on late Jaswant Singh Gill’s efforts to rescue 65 miners from a flooded coal mine in Raniganj in 1989.

Just recently, 41 miners were rescued from a mine in Uttarakhand. The operation carried on for more than 15 days, after which all the miners were back with their families. The rescue operators were hailed for their efforts and they received widespread acclaim. The incident instantly reminded people of Mission Raniganj, which had recently released in theatres in October this year.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively asked director Tinu Suresh Desai if he is thinking of making a film on the Uttarakhand miners’ rescue. He said, “There is no such thought right now. But I am happy that all 41 workers who were trapped have come out hale and hearty. I was also following the news for the 17 days during which they were trapped. The viewers have related Mission Raniganj with this rescue mission.”

Desai could relate with the incident since he carried out a lot of research for Mission Raniganj. “You wish to make a film of only two or more hours, but you have a lot of research material,” he said. “You realize that every minute a new challenge emerges in front of the rescuers. So, there were a lot of challenges in front of them in 1989. They didn’t have the technicalities like we have today. Still, they made a capsule and did everything. Similarly, even during the Uttarakhand incident, there were a lot of challenges.”

Elaborating on the same, he added, “We have read details about this on news channels and newspapers. But after doing all the research for Mission Raniganj, I am sure they must have felt a lot more difficulties, which the news channels and newspapers wouldn’t have got to know. There are certain things you can tell people whereas they are few things you can’t because it can increase tension. Ideally, such incidents should not take place. But it’s very good that they showed team work and rescued all the miners and reunited them with their families.”
