Main Vaapas Aaunga is all set to release in theatres on June 12.

Singer Vipin Aneja is excited as his song ‘Tere Paas Main’ from Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga has just released. The makers have also recorded a female version of the song, which will be played in the movie. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Aneja said that he has been associated with the film’s composer AR Rahman for long. He sung for the celebrated composer in the Tamil and Telugu film Sarkar and also lent his voice in the latter’s musical show Dashavatar, which is a property of Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC).

Aneja is delighted that he finally got to sing a Hindi film composition by AR Rahman. “Finally, our Hindi film song has happened together after a very long association. This is a dream come true for any singer. To get a chance to sing in his film in a song that has a combination of Rahman bhai and (lyricist) Irshad Kamil is very special for me,” he said.

Aneja is amazed by Rahman’s passion towards music. “He is the most sufi person,” he said. “His religion is only music. Whenever I meet him, our conversations about work are very brief. I visit Chennai to record my songs with him. Before that, he makes me sing while he plays the piano. He is always involved in music. Constantly, he is living, breathing and eating music. He has made India proud at a global level. He is very humble and futuristic. That’s why he is still relevant and doing well.”

When asked how he bagged the song, the singer said, “I have also done live shows with Rahman sahab in Malaysia, Dubai and a few other countries. I am a different instrument. I am not like the generic male singers who have been there in the industry. Only a jeweller knows how a diamond is to be set. To understand this, a jeweller like AR Rahman was necessary. He was impressed when I sang the shlok ‘Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya’ in Dashavatar.”

He continued, “I told him that all his songs are higher than my scale. He asked me to make him hear his songs. So, I sang ghazals for an hour and a half till 4 or 5 am. I sang ghazals by Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan and even yesteryear films songs which are ghazals. He heard it and it stayed in his mind. So, he called me for this song. I recorded two versions of this in Chennai. I recorded it twice again in Mumbai with final lyrics changes and everything.”

Aneja is also all praise for Imtiaz Ali. He believes that the filmmaker is the reason why Main Vaapas Aaunga will be remembered for ages. “He is such a wonderful person that I won’t be able to express it in words,” he said. “He is full of simplicity. Yet he is such learned and elevated soul. He gives so much respect to people he works with. His film Tamasha shows the kind of soul he is. I am sure something divine will happen with this film. I feel after Dhurandhar, this film is going to achieve greatness, all because of Imtiaz Ali. He has chosen the right composer, cast and team.”

Aneja has seen the changing landscape of music over the decades. “I was born in the 70s,” he said. “So, I have heard songs from the 70s, 90s and now I am working with Rahman sahab and Arko (Pravo Mukherjee). When we travel from the 90s till today, sonically things are changing sound scape-wise because we are catering to the Gen Z, which is consuming music today. But the basic feature of songs hasn’t changed. As long as people like Rahman sahab, Arko and others are there, different kinds of music will come out of India.”

Following Main Vaapas Aaunga, Vipin Aneja is looking forward to his forthcoming projects. “I am excited for the songs I have done with Arko for the upcoming couple of films. I will also release a lot of my non-film songs on my channel, so that I can build a community with the audience and they understand that I am a different voice,” he said.
