Amid so many flops at the box office, one film that has emerged as a surprise is the Telugu film, Karthikeya 2. It clashed with the much-awaited films, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan. For some reason, it had a release on a Saturday, on August 13. On Day 1, the Hindi version earned just Rs. 7 lakhs but then started growing dramatically. As of Friday, August 26, its collection stands at Rs. 20.11 crores and is all set to cross the Rs. 30 crores mark in its lifetime.
Ram Gopal Varma in an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama spoke about this sleeper hit. He said, “Laal Singh Chaddha is made at a cost of Rs. 175 crores and it didn’t open well. Sudeep’s Vikrant Rona also didn’t collect as per expectations. Meanwhile, Karthikeya 2 has been made on a budget of Rs. 5.50 crores. The main lead, Nikhil Siddhartha, is an actor who nobody knows in Telugu cinema also. He is not even considered a hero. In Hindi, it opened at Rs. 7 lakhs and now it’s doing double of Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan’s collections. I don’t think something like this has ever happened before.”
RGV continued, “If a film opens at Rs. 7 lakhs, you’ll expect it to die the second day. But it crossed the Rs. 3 crore mark on the second Sunday. It goes against every calculation you make. The first weekend is the lifeblood of a film; this is what we have been told in the last ten years. But this film is doing 40-50 times in the second weekend.”
Besides Nikhil Siddhartha, Karthikeya 2 also stars Anupama Parameswaran, Anupam Kher, Srinivasa Reddy and Adithya Menon. It is written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti.
