The Ajay Devgn-starrer Raid 2 has emerged as a huge success, collecting around Rs. 70 crores in the weekend. The moviegoers, who ventured out to see the movie, were surprised to read Salim Khan mentioned under ‘Special Thanks’. Usually, film personalities are thanked when they part with the title or when they have some minor contribution to the process. But when Bollywood Hungama exclusively reached out to director Raj Kumar Gupta, he revealed a fascinating trivia and how the legendary scriptwriter had an invaluable contribution to the film.
Raj Kumar Gupta told Bollywood Hungama, “This goes back coincidentally to May 1, 2021; Raid 2 also released on the same day, albeit four years later. My wife Myra (Myra Karn) and I had gone over for lunch at Salim saab’s house. Post lunch, over coffee, Salim Saab was discussing Raid’s first part. He particularly remarked how he enjoyed the confrontation scenes between Ajay Devgn sir and Saurabh Shukla sir. He had a keen observation; he told me, ‘Your climax was good but what if, in the climax scene, our hero (Amay Patnaik), instead of being locked inside the room, with all that money, had gone on the balcony and thrown the money at the mob saying – Public ka paisa public ko’!”
Raj Kumar Gupta continued, “Myra and I were blown away! Only a legendary screenwriter could come up with this thought and that’s why he is the Salim Khan Saab. Since then, I kept that thought in my mind and I decided that if Raid 2 happens and if the screenplay situation naturally allows me, then I would love to weave it into the script.”
Raj Kumar Gupta then said, “Cut to 2 years later and call it serendipity. It so happened that in our research while following Raid 2's story, we realized in the 80s and 90s, the single biggest threat facing income tax officers was mob violence incited by strongmen or politicians when they went to conduct a raid on them. That’s when Salim Khan Saab’s idea-cum-observation came back to me and that’s how I incorporated it into the narrative.”
He added, “I wanted to express my gratitude for his suggestion on the original Raid. Hence we have mentioned Mr Salim Khan’s name under ‘Special Thanks’. In all my humbleness, that scene is my tribute to the greatest screenwriter of Indian cinema.”
