EXCLUSIVE: Haddi star Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub shares the USP of the film; says, “It’s a special film and I am sure audiences have not watched this kind of movie before”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Haddi is a crime revenge drama that showcases Haddi and Harika, a transgender woman and the challenges attached to it. Joining him in the film is Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub. In an exclusive conversation, the actor spoke about the USP of the film.

There have been several crime revenge dramas out there on OTT. When asked why should the audience invest their time in watching Haddi or what was its USP, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub said, “I think Haddi's USP lies in its unconventional portrayal of the transgender narrative. There are many crime and revenge dramas on OTT, but I think the few things which are put in this film like the social element, the protagonist's approach and how things change are the factors which make it different. It’s a special film and I am sure audiences have not watched this kind of film. The treatment of the film is such that they change the protagonist into a transgender because of which the politics and equations between people change, which is beautiful.”

Transgenders are undermined in society at large. There aren’t many films with them in the lead. When asked how differently will they be portrayed in Haddi, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub replied, “What I generally saw was, when there is a special character, like a transgender, homosexual or any character from the LGBTQ community, they try to remove humour from it, and people fail to give dignity to these characters. From that we get to know the thinking of society, which I think becomes a problem.”

He further added, “Haddi does not have this problem, because the character has been treated with full dignity, and their humour has been used. It is not all heavy moments, there are lighter scenes / moments too and I think that's the beauty of this film. The way the LGBTQ community engages in conversations, the shared humour—these aspects have been depicted with utmost respect and dignity, avoiding any mockery. In this regard, I believe the film will do justice to the characters and the idea of the film.”

Directed by the debutant Akshat Ajay Sharma, this hard-hitting noir revenge drama stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anurag Kashyap in lead roles along with Ila Arun, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Saurabh Sachdeva, Shridhar Dubey, Rajesh Kumar, Vipin Sharma, and Saharsh Shukla in supporting roles. Produced by Zee Studios, Sanjay Saha and Radhika Nanda’s Anandita Studios, Haddi will stream on ZEE5 on September 7, 2023.
