Walking us through a typical day on set or before a red-carpet event, Vakil emphasizes the importance of preparation and adaptability. She explains that, “Makeup artists typically arrive 45 minutes before the actors to set up their stations and gather their tools. However, she said, “Each actor has their own unique routine, which can influence the workflow. It takes 1.5 hour for make-up and hair, 30 min for photos so it takes to 2 hours complete the whole look including photos.”
For red carpet events, in particular, Vakil underscores the significance of selecting the right makeup products. She explains, “Key is to do prep of the skin nicely and by opting for products that prevent the skin from appearing sweaty and ensure a flawless finish under bright lights, I ensure that my clients look their best from every angle”.
In the entertainment industry, teamwork is crucial for creating a cohesive look for actresses. Mitali Vakil shared her insights on how she coordinates with hairstylists, costume designers, and other team members to achieve this.
She explained, “For look tests, we start by gathering mood boards to understand the desired aesthetic. However, even without mood boards, collaboration comes naturally because everyone in the industry knows each other. Stylists and makeup artists are familiar with what looks best on which actor. It's a collective effort, with everyone working towards the common goal of making the actor look and feel their best”.
When it comes to makeup products, Mitali Vakil emphasizes the importance of choosing wisely, considering factors like climate and environment. She notes that what works in one place may not work in another, highlighting the challenge of adapting products to different conditions. In her extensive makeup kit, she relies on a variety of brands, each selected for its unique qualities. One of her favourite products is the Nars Matte Concealer, prized for its natural finish and versatility. She appreciates how it blends seamlessly with foundation, creating a flawless look for her clients.
In addition to Nars, Mitali favors brands like Glossier, Kosas, Tower 28, YSL, Chanel, and Merit. These brands offer a range of high-quality products that meet her standards for performance and reliability.
Mitali Vakil shares her insights on common makeup mistakes and offers advice to avoid them. She explains, “One common mistake people make is neglecting skin preparation. Prepping the skin properly ensures that makeup applies smoothly and lasts longer. Additionally, it acts as a protective layer, shielding the skin from potential harm caused by makeup products. Therefore, investing time in skincare routines such as cleansing, moisturizing, and priming is essential before applying makeup”.
Another mistake Mitali mentions is failing to remove makeup before sleeping. “Leaving makeup on overnight can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and overall damage to the skin”.Therefore, she advises thoroughly cleansing the face before bedtime to allow the skin to breathe and regenerate during the night.
Mitali Vakil shares her approach to balancing enhancing an actor's natural beauty while ensuring they maintain their sense of self. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing that each actor has their own unique style and preferences. She said, “What works for one actor may not necessarily work for another. Therefore, I prioritize making the actors feel comfortable and ensuring they trust her expertise”. “Building trust is key in this process I believe that when actors trust me, they can be confident that the makeup choices I make will enhance their features and make them feel good about themselves. This trust allows for open communication and collaboration, ensuring that the final look reflects the actor's personality and individuality”
