EXCLUSIVE: Bhushan Kumar on backing Diljit Dosanjh in Border 2, “It was Anurag Singh’s call that for Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon’s character, he wanted only Diljit”

When Border 2 hit the screens, audiences immediately connected not just with its action and patriotism but with its supporting cast, particularly Ahan Shetty and Diljit Dosanjh. Their inclusion was not accidental or merely star-driven. It was a carefully considered choice rooted in trust, history, and belief.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, producer Bhushan Kumar revealed that from the very beginning, director Anurag Singh had a clear vision for the character of IAF hero Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon. Bhushan explained, “That was his call from day one that for that character, for Sekhon’s character, he wanted only Diljit. I mean, we had a lot of discussions – whether to take this one or that one. But Diljit also wanted to do it, because he has done many films with Anurag, Punjabi films from earlier times, and very successful ones. So, they had a connection between them, and he always wanted to do this role.”

But the decision wasn’t without its challenges. As the film’s announcement sparked controversy online, Bhushan Kumar stood firmly behind the casting, rejecting the pressure of trolls. “If, because of trolls, a company like ours starts replacing people, then we shouldn’t make movies,” he said, reinforcing that the film industry should not be swayed by online outrage but guided by creative intent.

Bhushan’s faith in the supporting cast extended to Ahan Shetty as well. Calling him a “very sincere boy” and praising him for having Suniel Shetty-like values. Anurag described Ahan with a Punjabi affection that speaks volumes about his belief in the actor: “biba munda.”

Bhushan acknowledged that Ahan’s journey has been far from easy. After his debut, he had to wait long for his next major break and faced constant chatter. But Border 2 has started to change that narrative. Bhushan emphasized that Ahan’s perseverance and sincerity made him the right fit for the film. He said Ahan had “to wait long … and faced chatter, but Border 2 has started changing that.”

The support and confidence in the cast were not only professional but personal. Bhushan shared that after watching the film, even his mother praised the performances — not just of Sunny Deol, but of Diljit and Ahan as well. This kind of family approval reflects the emotional impact the film and its cast had on audiences, suggesting that the chemistry and sincerity on screen were felt off screen too.

In a time when casting is often dictated by online outrage, Border 2 stands out for choosing actors who were not only right for the roles but also capable of truly connecting with audiences.
